Welcome

Welcome to the home page of Montgomery Presbyterian Chapel and the three Anglican Parishes of St Nicholas’ Montgomery,  Archangel Michael & All Angels’ Forden & St. Tyssil’s Llandyssil.  All are welcome to share in worship and fellowship in our churches.

St. Nicholas’ is in the old County Town of Montgomeryshire. The Town has a basic Georgian feel about it. The Church is Norman, built in 1226. The grand tomb of George Herbert’s parents is to be seen here. There is a double Rood Screen & carved angels from the 13th Century mounted on this. The gate through is Elizabethan. There are some spectacular mid 19th century stained glass windows. The nave ceilings still show their original forms. There are a range of concerts held here during the year.  The Town is only small and there are a number of places to stay. I would recommend the Dragon Hotel (01686 668359 www.dragonhotel.com) an old coaching house & for bed & breakfast try Llwyn Cottage (01686668576) and The Stores (01686668617). There is a small local interest museum & a walk round the town led by circular signs letting people know of our history. The town is overlooked by the old Norman castle which still has free entry, thanks to CADW. One must not leave the town without having visited ‘Bunners’ an old established Ironmongers which when you are inside seems to sell everything & exist in more dimensions than are usual.

Forden is a completely different area. It too is set across Offa’s Dyke, but is a much more scattered area. It has the highest number of small holdings per square mile than any other area in GB. The Church is open from Easter to Harvest. It is only 150 years old. It is the second on the site. Forden Church is noted for its William Morris Windows.

Llandyssil is an old rural village with a population around 250. Much of the farm land was recovered from bracken and gorse only 70 years ago. The Church is worth seeing, but you need to collect the key from across the road. It is unusual because it was built as a ‘tractarian’ Church and is mainly unspoiled. Some of the frontals and vestments are over 100 years old.  Often forgotten amongst the myths about the great composer, Peter Warlock [originally Philip Heseltine] is that he was in fact organist in this church for a number of years & had brought Delius here to play on the fine Conaca Organ built in Huddersfield.

Do come out and spend a little time in this beautiful part of Wales. We are happy to help further if you phone 01686 668243

God bless you,
